What better way to share the news with our family then to surprise them too! We decide to wait until Mother's Day (2 weeks from when we found out) to try to get as much of our family together as possible and tell them the good news. We arrange brunch in Tucson at MiMi's Cafe at 11am, after we pick up my mom from the airport and before Amanda needs to drive back to California. Everyone can make it (except for my dad who was in Mexico). This is as good as it is going to get.
Mother's day comes and I am freaking out. So nervous. Can't sleep. Time is moving soooo slow. Dominic is wondering why I am so nervous. I know everyone will be excited but I can't help it. We have cards for our mom's that say Happy Mother's Day from your Grandbaby, then on the inside we wrote congrats! due in December (and it's not a furry animal this time!). Perfect they will be so surprised.
We get in the car to pick up my mom from the airport. Ok, Dom says, now I am feeling nervous. We pick up my mom and have a 30 minute ride to the restaurant to meet up with Dominic's family and my brother and sister. Longest car ride ever, good thing when we are nervous we just talk a lot and we managed not to blow it. We meet everyone at the restaurant and wait for a table for another 30 or so minutes. Longest wait ever...again.
Here we are sitting at our table, everyone is happy and chatty. We decided to wait until after we order to give the cards or we will never get our food after the news breaks. While we are waiting to order, Charles (Dominic's dad) proposes a toast "Happy Mother's Day" and Amanda (Dominic's ever so wise and sarcastic sister) looks at me sitting next to her and says "well if you are pregnant now is the time to say something"...internal monologue...oh wait what did she just say?! don't look at dominic, don't look at dominic or you will give it away, laugh it off, you can do this!... "haha oh cheers to that" I say nervously. Nobody catches anything unusual, ok we are good, surprise not blown.
We order and I am waiting for a lull in the conversation to give out Mother's Day cards. Dominic keeps nudging me from under the table, saying do it already! I am shaking so bad and can't find the right time to bring out the cards. nudge, nudge again from Dominic. Ok here it goes... Here are your Mother's day cards. Perfect simultaneous opening of the envelopes, couldn't have gone better!
We get awe struck looks from both of them, then crying, then is it real, is this real?! I'm trying to tell them to open the cards to read the inside. Everyone else at the table is wondering what is going on and seeing the reactions of the mothers realizing they both have the same cards and that there is a baby on the front everyone else starts to get it. We say we are having a baby to confirm we are not joking and everyone is excited and surprised. We get hugs and congrats from everyone and then we have an hour wait for our food but we have plenty to talk about now. It could not have gone better in our opinions. It is something we will definetely never forget. The faces were priceless!
We call our grandparents on speaker phone after brunch with our families listening in. We knew they would be super excited and there would be screaming. They followed through on our expectations. There was excitement and high pitched voices and the news was sure to travel through the families fast now! I learned something new during these conversations too... I was asked by my granny "when did the rabbit die?" I was so confused and was later told that that is how women used to find out they were pregnant, if giving their blood to the rabbit caused the rabbit to die it meant they were pregnant...who figured that out?! We were very happy to be able to share this moment with our grandparents and make them great grandparents!
Since my dad was in Mexico, he came back the next day and so we decide to take my mom and dad out for dinner and break the news again. I am nervous...again. How are we going to do this, we have no plan. Do we just come out and say it? We decide on chinese food and we come up with a good idea on how to tell him (we are full of good ideas these days).
We are at the restaurant and they bring us some hot and sour soup and some fortune cookies before dinner (odd but perfect). Yay this is going along with our plan wonderfully. So Dom, my mom and I each take a fortune cookie and take turns reading them aloud. Dom says his generic fortune. Good health and good fortune something along those lines. Dad is oblivious but listening while sipping his soup. I read mine outloud. It says "Dad, you are going to be a grandpa!" I look up and he is staring at me, mouth open, " what? really?! You? You are pregnant?!" I don't think I have ever seen my dad so surprised before. I answer "Yes Dad, we are having a baby". He is very excited to hear this and asks when he can start buying stuff. (Didn't expect that from my dad, but I am wondering the same thing haha). It was another great situation that worked perfectly and we will always remember it!
A little relief, it is starting to feel real now! we are pregnant! wow!
now we have to tell our friends...and the nervousness comes back...
I apologize for the unfortunate comment. Sometimes I am simply far too intuitive.
