The magical day has arrived and Logan is now cast free! Friday Logan and I went to the orthopedist and learned just what taking a cast off means- the saw...the loud, vibrating saw. Logan was not a fan. He sat on my lap as they had to saw both sides of the cast, it took awhile and he cried every time the saw came on, although really who can blame him. (Since this was all happening on my lap, I was the lucky recipient of fiberglass falling onto my thighs which as Dom and I learned the hard way with Logan's cast wearing down the last week, is very itchy! I got a cover half way through but the damage was already done by then, oh well!) Once they had sawed enough, they pried it apart so that they could cut through the rest of the lining and voila- cast free! Now that that trauma was over with we had one more obstacle...the x-ray. Luckily this time he didn't have to lay down, so I think sitting up and just making sure his leg was still was a lot easier this time around. After the x-ray we saw in our room a little while waiting for the doctor to bring the x-ray and have a look at Logan. He was moving his leg right away, bending and straightening it, which I was surprised at. His leg looked really dry and flaky, but not as bad as I was expecting considering he has eczema. The doctor came in and showed me the x-ray and pointed out where he saw new bone growth, so even though on the original x-ray we couldn't see a fracture, something was there! He explained that his skin looked pretty good considering and to not let him scratch it, that he will probably be scooting like he was and when he does attempt to stand or walk on his own terms he will probably be sensitive and his foot will turn out to give him balance and he will probably walk with a limp for a while. All of which Logan showed us when we got home. When he first went to scoot with out the cast on it wasn't as easy to slide, so he almost went head first into the ground, kind of funny, but he figured it out quick. He stood up by himself ok right away too and over the weekend has started cruising a bit and holding onto our hands and walking a little bit. He has a lot of work to do to get back to where he was but we are in no hurry. He needs to work on his balance, confidence, and speed...his top half leans forward saying 'go faster' and his bottom half is saying 'wait up!'. It was amazing the instant mood shift he had once the cast came off. He was a million times happier then he has been and Dom and I are now remembering what it was like to have a happy baby again now that he can be more independent. Granted he still is a bit clingy, he was carried around a lot for 3 weeks so he still insists on it more now then he ever did before, but he improves everyday. We are all SO happy to be done with his cast! Now let's hope for no more accessories for a long time ;)
Happily cast free on the way home :)
