A stomach bug yesterday had me feeling tired and I was nauseous every time I stood up, so I asked Dom to come home to help with Logan who I knew wouldn't be able to sleep the day away with me and my wretched tummy. So Dom did the 'stay at home mom' thing all day for me while I slept and complained and then finally barfed, which as you may know, always makes you feel better when you know it's been planning it's attack all day. So after that, sleep, a cup of noodles, sprite and lots of water I ended up making it through the day. Luckily I am functional today! Still not completely normal but good enough. How do parents take care of their kids when they are that sick without help is beyond me, thanks babe for rescuing me! Logan appreciates it too as we all know he can't sit still in one place for too long without going loco!
So back to Naptime in the crib. aka the torture arena.
You may remember nap time with Logan has always been a bit of a hassle. But with the swing/bouncer/car trip it was always a little easier- still fussed but guaranteed nap. He has never really been a long napper. He takes about 3 20-30 minute naps a day, which is fine, part of the problem is it takes about 30 minutes to get him to stop crying and just give into his sleepiness. The other part of the problem is he needs something to soothe him, the pacifier, motion, or being in our arms to help calm himself down (sometimes...ok usually, it requires all 3).
So when we went to the pediatrician we asked about napping and she said no more swing. If he is obviously tired and you know he will fall asleep the second you put him in the swing then lay him in his crib then and just let him cry it out, put a motion toy strapped to the side if that will help, if he just lays quiet and rests for 30 minutes then that is just as good as a nap. So the swing was dismantled to prevent any use by me in dire circumstances :( And nap time in the crib was our goal.
We tried the crying it out method and the child cried 1 hr 30 mins the first time before I went in and bounced his mattress so he would fall asleep. And all that for a 20 minute nap still. grrrr. So the next nap that day we try it again, 40 minutes of crying this time and he fell asleep by himself. 20 minute nap again. ok improvement! The next day the morning nap consisted of 1 hour of crying and I had to help him fall asleep again. 20 minute nap. Afternoon nap that day was back to 1 hr and 30 mins of crying again and another 20 minute nap. We decided that all that crying was making up the majority of his awake time just to get him to sleep for 20 minutes and that it wasn't worth it. We lasted 2 days, le sigh. So we tried to go back to rocking him until he is drowsy and laying him in the crib which was working somewhat before, but now he just cries once he knows he's not in your arms. So the process is still taking awhile, 30 or so minutes, for a short nap again. We decided to try and cut out his late nap he would sometimes take around 6 since we have been putting him to bed between 7:30-8 at night. One day the kid only took ONE 20 minute nap and that's it! On the plus side he was not waking up in the middle of the night just to fuss as much. We are attempting a set wake-up time now to see if that will help at all, so whether I want to or not haha, Logan is getting up at 7:30am and going to bed after a bath around 7:30-8. Hopefully this will help some. Although we decided to start this Monday and he ended up not going back to sleep like he usually does after his 6:30 feeding, Tuesday I woke up up at 7:30 but felt like crap so I took him to my room and we played on the bed, Wednesday (today) little booger woke up at 5:30 to eat which is fine, but cried when I put him back in his crib half asleep till 7:15 then I reluctantly woke him up at 7:30 only to fall back asleep with him in our bed at 8:15 because I still didn't feel good and he was tired. So maybe one day this week our routine will get going the right way!
We are still trying to figure out how best to help him get to sleep during the day. If he is in the car, stroller, in your arms, etc he can fall asleep without a problem which is very tempting around nap # 3 of the day when I am just about done trying! Today I swaddled him thinking maybe that will help him calm down and stop kicking his legs in protest, gave him his pacifier, turned on the sleep sheep to the heartbeat, turned on his motion aquarium on the side of his crib, and gave him a bear to hold...it worked for now! Sad thing is, what works one day, doesn't always work the next. Hopefully we will find a good solution soon. I am very thankful we don't have this problem at night though, I think we'd go crazy!
On another note, Logan has 4 teeth right now (bottom middle two and top two fangs) and he is getting in one of his top front teeth, so maybe he will look less like a werewolf/vampire ;)
We went to mass at the Newman center on Sunday after the race for the cure and Logan was all smiles back where mommy and daddy got married :)
